terrestrial ….. terrain. 地球上の、現世の、陸上の。

organism ….. organic matter. 有機体、微生物。

biotic ….. 生物の、生命の

abiotic ….. 非生物の。relating to things in the environment that aren’t living.

temperate deciduous forests …. Major biomes dominated by broadleaf trees that lose their leaves annually. 温帯落葉樹。

deciduous …… relating to body parts that fall out or fall off and are replaced by new ones.

precipitation ….. 沈殿、沈殿物、降水量、降水。


fungus….. 菌類。複数形はfungi.

yet to be ….. this phrase signifies something is unfinished or not yet finalized, but is expected to be completed in the future.

become extinct ….. die out, vanished.

magnificent …. exceptionally beautiful, impressive. 壮大な、雄大な、豪華な。

single cell ….. 単細胞。↔︎ multicellular

Antarctic continent….. 南極大陸。北極はthe Arctic.

endemic ….. 地方特有の、その土地特有の。regularly occurring within an area or community. An endemic disease 風土病 ↔︎ epidemic (特定の地域で、endemicよりも急速に広がる病気)

cape ….. 岬、マント

Biodiversity can also refer to the variety of ecosystems, or communities of living things and their environments.→ or以降で、variety of ecosystems を言い換えている(同格)。

enjoy ….. 「〜に恵まれている、〜を持っている」という意味もある。enjoy a good income.

pass on A ….. パスする、通り過ぎる、(情報などを)伝える。pass on what I’ve learned.

reproduce ….. 1. To produce a copy of something. 2. The act where living things produce their offspring.

fertilize ….. 肥沃にする、肥やす

give off ….. to emit, release, or send out something such a heat, light, gas, or a smell. Ex: The fire gave off thick black smoke.

fiber ….. 繊維。dietary fiber(食物繊維)、synthetic fiber(合成繊維)。

fabric ….. 布、織物。cloth. Ex: enough fabric to make a coat.

fertile ….. being fertilized. Fertile land can produce a large number of good quality crops. 肥沃な。

pharmaceutical ….. 薬学の、製薬の。

relive ….. to remember clearly an experience that happened in the past. Ex: whenever I smell burning, I relive the final moments of the crash.

reliever ….. 救済者、慰める人(もの)。pain reliever(鎮痛剤)

bark ….. 樹皮

cure ….. 治す、いやす、矯正する。cureは直ることが前提、treatは直るかどうかわからないが治療をする。healは、自己修復に焦点を当てる。

evolve from ….. to develop gradually, or originate from a previous or simpler form over time. Ex: Humans evolved from a common ancestor with apes.

ethnobotany ….. ethnic(民族)+ botany(植物学)。the interdisciplinary study of the relationship between people and plants, focusing on how different cultures use, manage, and perceive local flora for medicine and food, shelter, etc.

mine ….. (noun) a hole or system of holes in the ground where substances such as coal(石炭), metal, and salt are removed. Ex: coal mine, gold mine. 炭鉱、採掘場。 (Verb) to dig coal or another substances out of the ground. 採掘する。

wetland ….. 湿地。

ranch ….. (noun) a type of large farm on which animals are kept. (Verb) run, manage a ranch. cattle ranchは、牧場という具体的な場所を指す。cattle ranchingは、牧畜の活動自体を指す。

thrive in ….. to grow, develop, or be successful within a specific environment, situation, or condition. Ex: It’s all the technology you’ll ever need to thrive in the modern game.

multiply ….. 1. To add a number to itself a particular number of times. Ex: If you multiply 7 by 15, you get 105. 2. To increase very much in number.

prey ….. a creature that is hunted and killed for food by another animal.

hunt A to extinction ….. Aを絶滅させるまで狩り続ける。to不定詞は、動詞Vをした結果至った状態を表すことがある。

protected breeding populations ….. specialized, managed groups of organisms maintained to prevent extinction.

document (verb) ….. record in written, photographic, or other form. record, register, report.

wilderness ….. natural, undeveloped land not significantly modified by human activity. 原野、荒地。

set up … 1. place something in position. 2. establish a business, institution, or other organization. 3. establish someone in a particular capacity, occupation, or role.
