straw bales may arrive at the building site already containing grain-eating pests.

→ already containing すでに〜の状態で(分詞構文)

A straw bale house is made by stacking compact straw bales for either the main structure or for insulation. Since straw is entirely an agricultural byproduct, it has been regarded as eco-friendly material and is recently picking up steam. For instance it requires less energy to grow, process, and transport compared to traditional material such as lumber. It can be also plowed back into the earth to decompose naturally. In addition, using straw costs inhabitants less money for heating and cooling the interior. That’s because straw has a great thermal mass.
Surprisingly, straw bale house has lower fire risk than conventional construction house. This is because it uses the straw bale, which is tightly packed so that there are no air pockets to sustain a fire.

However, there are some disadvantages too. Firstly, building houses with straw bales requires researching guidelines or codes offered by local government. Since some countries don’t even mention it in their building codes, it’s difficult to comply and obtain a permit. City officials might find the concept confusing and therefore disagree with your plan.
Second, we should bear in mind that straw bales are susceptible to moisture-related problems such as mildew and mold. Also pests are a serious worry for its residents though some enthusiasts suggest applying appropriate plaster will mitigate the problem.

In summary, though straw bale houses have tremendous advantages for both inhabitants and the environment, it requires homeowners to monitor its condition and to maintenance.
